Data Storage and Handling

We never store student points on our server. The points are only computed and displayed in the Teacher’s Dashboard when the teacher hits the “Check Homework” button. Once the browser is closed the points are not saved. Only the teacher that is linked to the student may look at points for the particular student.

The only person who has access to the displayed points is the teacher with their secure user ID and encrypted password.

PASSWORDS: All passwords stored on our servers are encrypted.

CREDIT CARD PROCESSING: We only use Paypal for credit card transactions. No credit card information is processed or stored on our servers ever.

STUDENT ACCOUNTS: We ask for their first name, last name, email address and school name to create the account. The school name lets us customize their page with the school logo. No mailing address or phone number is used to set up an account.

ASL Inside has made the following commitments that attest to its compliance:

ASL Inside agrees to be designated as a “school official” with “legitimate educational interests” in customer data as defined under FERPA.

Customer data would include any student records created through a school’s use of ASL Inside’s Web Service.

When handling student education records, ASL Inside agrees to abide by the limitations and requirements imposed by 34 CFR 99.31 just as school officials do.

Furthermore, ASL Inside does not mine customer data for advertising.

ASL Inside also commits not to disclose customer data except as the educational institution directs, or as required by law.

As a result of these commitments, customers that are subject to FERPA—both educational institutions and third parties to whom they give access to sensitive student data—can confidently use ASL Inside’s Web services to teach American Sign Language (ASL).
